Gr.5 – Gr.8

MIDDLE
SCHOOL

Our Middle School Year Program {MYP} develops internationally-minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The MYP provides a framework of academic challenge and holistic education that enhances our American curriculum through engaging and personalized learning. The MYP fosters the social, thinking, research, communication and self-management skills that help students learn how to succeed in and beyond the classroom.

The MYP culminates in our Highschool Years Program, in Grade 9 with community work apprehension. We guide students throughout Middle School years to collaborate and pursue service learning. Encouraging and enabling students to participate in self-directed exploration, generating new insights, demonstrating skills, attitudes and knowledge, communicating effectively, demonstrating responsible action and appreciating the process of learning and taking pride in their accomplishments.

Language

At MEIS, students use their English class to interact with a range of texts and generate insight into moral, social, economic, cultural and environmental domains. They continually grow in their abilities to form opinions, make decisions, and reason ethically.

We also provide sustained language learning: Arabic & Turkish. Giving students the opportunity to develop insights into the features, processes and craft of language and the concept of culture, and to realize that there are diverse ways of living, viewing and behaving in the world.

Our Middle Years Program (MYP) language and literature courses develop skills in six areas:

  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Viewing
  • Presenting

Inquiry is at the heart of  MYP language learning and aims to support students’ understanding by providing them with opportunities to independently and collaboratively investigate, take action and reflect on their learning.

Mathematics

Mathematics in our MYP program, helps students develop problem-solving techniques that transcend the discipline and that are useful in the world beyond school. Students in the MYP learn how to represent information, to explore and model situations, and to find solutions to familiar and unfamiliar problems.

At MEIS, we provide a rigorous and relevant math curriculum with many opportunities for students to stretch their thinking through challenges and contests.

Science

The Middle Years Program {MYP} sciences framework encourages students to investigate issues through research, observation and experimentation, working independently and collaboratively.  As they investigate real examples of science application, students will discover science and the environment.

Social Studies

In social studies, students collect, describe and analyze data used in studies of societies, test hypotheses, and learn how to interpret complex information, including original source material. This focus on real-world examples, research and analysis is an essential aspect of this subject.

At MEIS, students use their Social Studies class to respect and understand the world around them.  Social Studies class equips them with the necessary skills to inquire into historical, contemporary, geographical, political, social, economic, religious, technological and cultural factors that have an impact on individuals, societies and environments.

    Physical & Health Education

In the Middle Years Programme {MYP}, physical and health education empowers students to understand and appreciate the value of being physically active and to develop the motivation for making healthy life choices.

The Physical and Health Education program at MEIS combines theory and practical skills.  All students learn to be physically active and healthy. Students gain exposure to physical games and learn to recognize the importance of mental and physical health.

    Visual Arts

At MEIS we offer visual arts. In the Middle Years Program {MYP}, students develop through creating, performing and presenting visual communication in ways that engage and convey feelings, experiences and ideas. It is through this practice that students acquire new skills in Arts class and master those skills developed in prior learning. Students have opportunities to function as artists, as well as learners of the arts.

      Information Communication Technology

As part of our Middle Years Program, Information Technology challenges all students to:

      • Apply practical and creative thinking skills to solve problems.
      • Explore the role of technology in both historical and contemporary contexts.

Our IT courses focus on problem solving using technology, combining digital and product design. Students take IT computer classes year-round and build on their own creativity and innovation through the digital cycle framework.

        CORE VALUES

The Middle School at MEIS is a place where students are greeted every day with a warm welcome and where a culture of caring and connectedness is achieved through our Advisory Program. Our core values of Respect, Integrity, Responsibility, Perseverance and Kindness drive our teaching of character and academics.

The MYP fosters the social, thinking, research, communication and self-management skills that help students learn how to learn in order to succeed and how to make practical connections between their studies and the real world.
